Government Contracts for Difference spark energy debate

The government has allocated the latest round of Contracts for Difference (CfD) for renewable energy, with several projects splitting opinion across the energy sector.
In particular, plans for a new biomass plant in Grangemouth, Scotland have raised the ire of environmentalists, with Biofuelwatch lambasting the government for its CfD award. The environmental organisation has long disputed biomass’s renewable credentials, claiming it drives deforestation and produces more CO2 than coal per unit of electricity. Biofuelwatch has also expressed disappointment that six ‘energy from waste’ projects across England and Wales have received CfD awards.

“We are dismayed to see yet more subsidies going to power stations that will burn biomass and waste – neither of which are remotely sustainable,” said Almuth Ernsting, co-director of Biofuelwatch.
“We are particularly shocked to see money awarded to a large biomass power station in Grangemouth, one which we must assume will burn imported wood pellets or woodchips, in an already heavily polluted town. The UK already burns more wood in power stations than we can produce annually, which causes forest destruction in other parts of the world such as the southern US. Awarding more money to power stations to burn more wood is only going to make this problem worse.”
But while Biofuelwatch questions the credibility of biomass as a renewable power source, others claim it is an important part of the efforts to decarbonise. Dr Tim Rotheray, director of the Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE), welcomed the new biomass CHP (combined heat and power) plants, which will add a total of 85.64 MW of capacity to the grid.
“Renewable CHP plants are a key way for industrial energy users to drive down emissions, support the power networks and remain competitive,” he said.

National Shipbuilding Strategy calls for Type 31e frigates

Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon has unveiled a new National Shipbuilding Strategy which includes plans for the first batch of Type 31e frigates for the Royal Navy.
Today’s announcement is part of a new National Shipbuilding Strategy which meets the challenge set by Sir John Parker in 2016 whose independent report into British naval shipbuilding proposed far-reaching recommendations to transform the UK maritime industry.
Today’s Strategy sees the government accept Sir John’s recommendations. Building on the government’s industrial strategy, it outlines an ambition to transform the procurement of naval ships, make the UK’s maritime industry more competitive, grow the Royal Navy fleet by the 2030s, export British ships overseas, and boost innovation, skills, jobs, and productivity across the UK.
It also announces the government’s plan to procure new Type 31e General Purpose Frigates, with a price cap set at no more than £250m each for the first batch of five vessels that will be built in the UK.
Set to enter service by 2023, the frigates could be built in a way which could see them shared between yards and assembled at a central hub.
Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon said: “This new approach will lead to more cutting-edge ships for the growing Royal Navy that will be designed to maximise exports and be attractive to navies around the world.
“Backed up by a commitment to spend billions on new ships, our plan will help boost jobs, skills, and growth in shipyards and the supply chain across the UK.”
Sir John Parker said: “I am very impressed by the courage that the Secretary of State has shown – and the Government – in adopting my recommendations, which were very extensive, and will change the shape of naval shipbuilding over the country in the future.
“The next challenge is to come up with a world-leading design; one that can satisfy the needs of the Royal Navy and the export market. We have the capability to do that, the will is there and it is a tremendous opportunity for UK shipbuilding.”

Happy academics prove that money isn’t everything

Despite earning lower salaries on average than their colleagues in other sectors, UK engineering academics are considerably happier in their jobs, according to The Engineer’s 2017 Salary Survey.
Despite pay concerns, UK engineering academics are relatively happy in their jobs
Based on responses from 2743 engineers working across 11 different sectors, this year’s survey – which was published earlier this summer – found that despite receiving the lowest average annual salary amongst UK engineers (£43,809), 61 per cent of academics are content in their current roles.
This contrasts with the energy sector – which despite offering amongst the highest average salaries (£51,953) appears to have a relatively unhappy workforce. Just 45.7 per cent said they were happy in their roles.

Interestingly, despite being reasonably content in their roles in comparison with other sectors, academics are generally unhappy with their pay levels. Just 31.7 per cent of respondents from this sector told us that they are happy with what they get paid.
One explanation for academics’ overall contentment could be the fact that they tend to receive more holiday than their colleagues in other areas with 41.5 per cent of respondents telling us that they enjoy more than 30 days paid leave per year.

UK seeks to strengthen research collaboration following Brexit

The UK wants to continue playing a major role in creating a brighter future for all European citizens by strengthening collaboration with European partners in science and innovation after Brexit.
This is one of the conclusions from a paper published today that outlines Britain’s objectives for ‘an ambitious science and innovation agreement with the EU’ following Brexit.
The paper highlights projects where the UK is working with EU and non-EU nations in furthering research into areas that include space, nuclear fusion, and medicine and suggests the potential merit in ‘designing a more ambitious agreement’ that should be broad and make room for new areas of research.
Brexit Secretary David Davis said: “This paper sends a clear message to the research and innovation community that we value their work and we feel it is crucial that we maintain collaboration with our European partners after we exit.”
In reference to the UK’s vitality in international research, the paper states that the share of EU co-authored publications in the top ten per cent of highly cited publications is higher when collaborating with the UK. It further added that freedom of movement will cease to apply in Britain, but that exceptions would be made for suitably qualified researchers and that ‘migration between the UK and the EU will continue after the UK leaves the EU.’
“It is vital we ensure research communities can continue to access the high level skills that support the science and innovation sector,” said science minister Jo Johnson. “From space exploration and developing better and safer medicines, to nuclear fusion research, the UK and Europe has a long history of close collaboration to meet the world’s great challenges. It’s in our mutual benefit to maintain this successful partnership.”
The report concludes that the ‘UK would welcome dialogue with the EU on the shape of a future science and innovation agreement, reflecting our joint interest in promoting continued close cooperation, for the benefit of UK and European prosperity.’
Commenting on the report, Prof John Womersley, director-general of the European Spallation Source, said: “The document says many positive things. The aspiration of achieving an ambitious science agreement between Britain and the EU is absolutely correct. But the paper is so lacking implementation details that it will probably disappoint most of the science community rather than reassure them. Having the right goals is a good start; but knowing how to get them is also essential.”
