Last week’s poll: investing for productivity

Since the 2015 general election we’ve heard a lot from government about their plans to improve productivity and make the UK the richest of all the major economies by 2030.
Similar proclamations were made in the Budget on November 22, 2017, and the publication of the government’s Industrial Strategy white paper on November 27, 2017 identifies the ways in which government, industry and academia can collaborate to pull the UK up the G7 productivity rankings and boost prosperity.
There are many targets for investment that have been suggested as a solution to raising industrial productivity, and we asked Engineer readers what they thought would be most effective.
The majority of respondents (58 per cent) thought skills and training as foremost in the battle to improve productivity, an issue addressed in part in the chancellor’s Budget, which allocated funds toward to education and training.
Just under a fifth (19 per cent) thought robotics the key focus area, whilst 10 per cent opted for Industry 4.0/Big Data. Of the remaining 13 per cent, nine per cent thought advanced machining/additive the key area for improved productivity, and four per cent went for ‘other’, an option that encouraged participants specify their alternative solution to the productivity puzzle.
Of those in the ‘other’ four per cent, Another Steve said: ‘The weak link for UK industry, in my opinion, is middle management. Too many managers with no qualifications, winging it or learning on the job. Doesn’t matter how good the technical staff are if their managers aren’t competent. This directly affects productivity.’
Andyg added: ‘Give the right motivation. Give people pride in what they do, why they do it and its place in the scheme of things. Treat staff like people – not “resources”. Provide good career structures, pensions etc. Recognise that productive does not equal cheap. There is too much emphasis on cheap – not enough on quality – viz the austerity programme. It seems that all the emphasis is on driving down costs and not enough on raising quality and value. But then that’s the basic flaw with a system based on infinite growth.
Ian Downie commented: ‘The best way to start improving productivity would be to remove all the non-value added activities from our daily work. Such as irrelevant training. Someone told whoever is in charge that training is a good thing, so as soon as someone thinks of new training, like how to use a ladder, they send us all on the course, whether we will ever use a ladder or not. Almost every week we are sent to irrelevant training and irrelevant meeting.’

Imperial team takes first steps towards robot restaurant

Students from Imperial College London have taken part in a hackathon to develop the technology required for a robot restaurant.
Organised by technology incubator Founders Factory, the event saw teams given 48 hours and some basic equipment to come up with design concepts and prototypes. Three separate challenges were laid down: reducing waste, increasing efficiency of food preparation, and creating a novel dining experience.

Industrial strategy lays foundations for productivity gains

Plans to make Britain the world’s most innovative nation by 2030 have been outlined today in the government’s Industrial Strategy white paper.

The whitepaper’s Five Foundations address ways in which productivity will be improved, whilst Four Grand challenges identify global trends and the opportunities they represent.
The white paper’s Five foundations for improved productivity are concentrated on ideas, people, infrastructure, business environment and places. Much of the detail – including investing in digital, maths and technical education, supporting electric vehicles and boosting digital infrastructure – was announced in the Budget on November 23, 2017. Also included in the chancellor’s Budget were the support structures for each foundation, including increasing the rate of R&D tax credit to 12 per cent.
The white paper also confirms that government will go ahead with a series of Sector Deals, with construction, life sciences, automotive and AI the first to benefit from these long-term partnerships with government, backed by private sector co-investment.
Ahead of the signing of the Life Sciences Sector Deal, the government today confirmed that life sciences company MSD is set to make a major investment into the UK economy with the opening of a new UK life sciences discovery research facility in London. The new UK Discovery Centre is expected to create 150 new research roles and accommodate approximately 800 additional staff.
“Our life sciences sector is one of the UK’s fastest developing industries, with a turnover in excess of £64bn, employing 233,000 across the UK,” said business secretary Greg Clark. “MSD’s commitment today, and the wider Sector Deal investment we have secured, proves the process outlined in the Industrial Strategy can give companies the confidence and direction they need to invest in the UK.”
According to the government, the Four Grand Challenges – centred on artificial intelligence, clean growth, ageing society and future mobility – represent an open invitation to business, academia and civil society to work with the government in developing new technologies that help the UK exploit these global opportunities.
The white paper follows extensive engagement by government with industry, academia and business bodies who submitted almost 2,000 responses to the green paper consultation earlier in 2017.
