C2I 2017 shines spotlight on collaborative engineering innovation

12th December 2017 11:50 am

The Engineer’s annual Collaborate To Innovate (C2I) campaign came to a fascinating conclusion at its recent conference.

Now in its second year, Collaborate To Innovate was launched to celebrate and highlight the role that collaboration plays in developing the technological solutions to some of our biggest problems.

We wanted to champion the depth of the relationship between the UK’s businesses and its academic research community. And – perhaps most importantly – we wanted to explore exactly what it is about these projects that makes them successful.

After an exhaustive shortlisting and judging process we announced the winners at a special party held earlier this year in London. But this wasn’t the end of the process.

C2I 2017 culminated with a conference at Coventry’s Manufacturing Technology Centre on December 7 where – alongside keynote speakers including former business secretary and leader of the Liberal Democrats Sir Vince Cable – the winners talked about the technologies they’ve developed, the problems they’ve solved and the challenges they’ve overcome.

The projects on show at this years conference – which you can read more about here – were a striking reminder of the depth and variety of engineering expertise in the UK. But they all had had one thing in common: they’re all the products of collaboration, inspiring examples of what can be achieved when different disciplines and different areas of expertise are brought together to solve a problem.

We look forward to exploring and championing these important themes once again in Collaborate to Innovate 2018.

Watch this space for information on how to enter.

Finally, we’d like to say a huge thank you to all of the judges, sponsors, delegates and above all the engineers and researchers who have helped make Collaborate to Innovate 2017 such a fascinating and rewarding initiative.

Promoted content: METAV 2018 – The Trade Fair for Production Technology

8th December 2017 2:44 pm

The 20th International Exhibition for Metalworking Technologies, which will take place from 20 to 24 February in Düsseldorf, shows the entire value added chain in an overall organic view. The classical topics of metalworking are found at the core of the METAV, such as machine tools, production systems, high-precision tools, automated material flows, computer technology, industrial electronics, and accessories.

Classical metalworking and innovation are of course not a contradiction at the METAV. The latest technologies in traditional production technology can be seen at the fair, as can current solutions for Industry 4.0. With the core area, the METAV addresses numerous user industries including the automotive industry and its component suppliers, machine manufacturing, medical technology and aircraft construction, electrical engineering and electronics as well as the ironworking, sheet metal cutting and metalworking industries.

This heart of the fair is intrinsically connected with the so-called Areas, ...

The Engineer poll: 69 per cent of respondents back remain

By Jon Excell 12th December 2017 11:09 am

According to The Engineer’s latest poll on Brexit, readers are now more strongly in favour of remaining in the EU than they were on the eve of the 2016 referendum.

Running from the 5th to the 11th of December 2017, the publication’s latest poll on the topic attracted votes from 1467 respondents, 69 per cent of whom said that they would vote remain if the referendum were repeated.

Although responses are anonymous, and the sample group will not exactly match that of The Engineer’s June 2016 poll, the latest statistics suggest that the proportion of engineers wishing to remain in the EU has grown over the past 18 months. In the June 2016 poll – which attracted 1364 votes –  52 percent of respondents said they were voting to remain, 43 per cent to leave, whilst 4 per cent were undecided.

As well as asking which way readers would vote in a notional re-rerun we also asked whether they had changed their minds since 2016.

The majority of voters – 88 percent – haven’t changed their view since the referendum. The events of the past 18 months have prompted a change of opinion amongst some, however. The largest shift has been seen in leave voters switching to remain (8 per cent). But the poll also shows that some who voted remain have now decided that the UK would be better off outside of the EU, with 4 percent of respondents selecting this option.

Comments on the poll, which were roughly split between remain and leave, retrod some familiar arguments.

Arguing passionately in favour of remaining in the EU, John Sally Swigglebottom rubbished the referendum results arguing that: “to claim that a narrow result in a non-binding referendum represents the will of the people in a campaign that was dominated not by pragmatic arguments but by untruths (particularly by Brexiters) is truly astonishing.”

UK government announces support for next-generation nuclear technologies

8th December 2017 11:41 am

The UK government has unveiled a series of measures aimed at driving growth in the nuclear sector, and positioning the UK as a world-leader in next generation nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors

At the heart of the package is a pledge to provide up to £56m to support r&d into advanced and small modular reactors.

The first stage of this finding package will see £4m made available for feasibility studies and up to £7m to further develop the capability of nuclear regulators who support and assess advanced nuclear technologies. If this goes well, up to £40m will be made available for advanced modular reactor  R&D projects and up to a further £5m for regulators. The government also plans to support early access to regulators to build the capability and capacity needed to assess and licence small reactor designs and will establish an expert finance group to advise how small reactor projects could raise private...
